Visit Us Accessibility Accessibility Please note that the museum lift will be unavailable to visitors requiring accessibility assistance until further notice. We appreciate your understanding and patience during this time. We want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable during their visit to the Museum of Chinese Australian History. Our team is here to help make your experience as easy and enjoyable as possible. Entrance access Our building has step-free access from Cohen Place. Cohen Place is a small laneway shared with neighbouring restaurants and a variety of other businesses. At certain times of day there may be smells from cooking or cigarette smoke present near the entrance. Visitors with sensitivities to smoke or strong odours may wish to plan accordingly. Please note that our entrance doors are heavy, not machine-assisted, and open inwards. Our staff will gladly help you with the doors when you arrive should you require assistance. Our front door is 140 cm wide. Floor access The Museum has five levels: basement, ground, first, second and third floors. Ground, first, second and third floors: o These floors are accessible via elevator. o Our elevator entrance is 88 cm wide. Basement: o Accessible via ramp. o Please note that the ramp is curved and set at a steeper angle than current accessibility standards allow, so you may require assistance when moving up or down. All floors are also connected by stairs. Exhibition access All of our exhibitions can be accessed by visitors using assisted mobility, including wheelchairs and walking frames. Our friendly staff are available if you need assistance or information about specific spaces. Accessible toilet A fully accessible toilet is located on the first floor. Baby change facilities are also available upon request. If you need directions or assistance finding this space, please speak with a member of our team. Sensory information We understand that everyone experiences the Museum differently. To support visitors with sensory needs, we offer a range of resources: Sensory kits are available on request from the front desk. Sensory maps can be viewed here. We are currently finalising a sensory map for our basement level, which houses the Finding Gold exhibition. This floor includes several high-sensory elements. Please speak to one of our friendly staff members if you have any questions or would like more information about what to expect in this space. The use of a dedicated quiet space can be organised in advance. The Museum is generally quiet between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, although this can vary. If you’d like to discuss arranging a quiet-time visit, or the use of a quiet space during your visit, please contact us at [email protected].
