The following Education Resources have been produced by the Chinese Museum to support teachers in the classroom and are aligned with the Victorian and the Australian Curriculum. They include lesson plans and classroom activities.


Exploring a range of themes including Australian identity, belonging and exclusion, racial discrimination, individual and family sacrifice, and heroism, CHINESE ANZACs presents a unique opportunity to examine parallels between WWI and WWII.

It tells the untold stories of Chinese Australians who overcame discrimination and through their persistence and perseverance, they were able to serve alongside their countrymen.

Creating an exciting learning opportunity for students, the Chinese ANZACs Education Resource is aligned to the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 for the subject of History for Year Levels 9 & 10.

Legend of the White Snake Education Resource

This Education Resource has been produced by the Museum of Chinese Australian History to support teachers in the teaching and learning of the learning areas of Visual Arts, Chinese Language, and the Intercultural Capability.

Aligned to the Victorian Curriculum 2.0, the activities in this resource encourage students to develop and enhance their understanding of the historical, cultural, and social significance of selected artefacts from the Chinese Museum Collection.

The resource is designed to be used flexibly and can be adapted to suit all year levels and abilities.

It can be used as a pre- and/or post-visit activity with your Chinese Museum Education Program experience.

Visual Arts: Exploring/ Developing Practices/ Creating/ & Presenting

Intercultural Capability: Culture, Identity and Belonging/ & Cultural Diversity

Components of the Legend of the White Snake Resource are in PDF format

  1. Introductory Notes – these explain how the resource can be used
  2. Discussion Notes – are designed to be used in conjunction with the presentation.
  3. Optional Activity - this is found within the Discussion Notes.
  4. Presentation – may be used by teachers to introduce the topic as a way of tuning in, facilitate the exploration of ideas and to stimulate classroom discussion. Alternatively, students may explore the presentation independently on their own personal devices.
  5. Spiral Snake Art Activity - intended as a whole class or whole school fun art activity that can be displayed in your classroom or school community. This activity includes three different snake designs, provided as printable PDFs with instructions.


Year of the Dragon 2024 Education Resource

This Year of the Dragon 2024 Education Resource has been produced by the Museum of Chinese Australian History to support teachers in the teaching and learning of the learning areas of:

History, Intercultural Capability, Asia and Australia’s Engagement with Asia, and Visual Arts.

Aligned to the Victorian Curriculum, the activities in this resource encourage students to develop and enhance their understanding of the historical, cultural and social significance of selected artefacts from the Chinese Museum Collection. 

The resource is designed to be used flexibly and can be adapted to suit all year levels and abilities.

Multicultural Snapshots Toolkit

Levels: 5-10    

Victorian Curriculum:  History, Intercultural Capability, Civics and Citizenship 

Overview:  

The Multicultural Snapshots Toolkit provides teaching and learning content, activities, and resources to support students gaining knowledge about the history, culture and faiths of the five museum communities represented by Multicultural Museums Victoria. The Toolkit features selected museum objects to ignite student engagement with multicultural and historical perspectives, intercultural understanding, civic awareness, and the enterprise of migrants and individuals of diverse heritage who form the Australian identity and shape a diverse and innovative Victoria. 

There are 15 teaching and learning units in the Toolkit. The teaching and learning units are organised under the themes of Narrative, Innovation, and Enterprise.

Each Unit has an associated reference directory, selected web resources, student worksheets and teachers’ tools to support and expand learning.

Language, a Key to Survival

Language, a Key to Survival: Cantonese-English Phrasebooks in Australia explores how Chinese from the gold rush period onwards used phrasebooks to help them find their way in Australia. Contains classroom activities designed for teachers to use in conjunction with the web story, including inquiry questions, essay topics, document study and other activities. A resource-rich web story can be found on the Culture Victoria site. It includes a wealth of images and videos.


Zheng He's Treasure Hunt

Zheng He’s Treasure Hunt encourages primary students to engage in a treasure hunt throughout the Chinese Museum. Zheng He, who lived during the time of the Ming Dynasty as the admiral of China’s navy helps students to search the museum for clues and learn about Chinese history. Students can visit Reception to receive a beautiful prize upon completion of the treasure hunt. Ideal for self-guided visits. Available at the Reception. Price: $5.

    The Chinese Museum’s building, located in the heart of Chinatown, was built by the Cohen Bros. in 1890 and used originally as a furniture warehouse. It was acquired in 1984 by the Victorian State Government to enable the establishment of a Museum to provide the heritage and cultural foundation for Melbourne’s Chinatown.
