Join us for the launch of contemporary artist Zhou Xiaoping’s book, From Crowds to Wilderness. Zhou Xiaoping is a unique Chinese Australian artist who has lived and worked with Aboriginal communities in Arnhem land and beyond. His own artistic style is a blend of Chinese and Aboriginal influences, and he has been pivotal to introducing Aboriginal art to the Chinese art world.

His exhibition, Trepang: China & the story of Macassan-Aboriginal trade, combined historical research, artefacts and contemporary art, illuminating the early peaceful trading relationships between China and Aboriginal Australians.

He has been undertaking a four-year research and creation project into Aboriginal Chinese people in Australia and their descendants, Our Story. This project will also culminate in an exhibition of both historical research, oral history and contemporary Chinese Aboriginal artists.

Xiaoping’s book speaks to his extraordinary journey as an artist and human being, from China through to his involvement with Aboriginal communities in Australia. Join us for what will prove to be an insightful and engaging discussion.
